A Deus Surf Swap Meet, generally speaking, is where the volume knob of motorcycle and surf enthusiasm is turned up to the max. But the swap meet at the Emporium on Saturday August 3rd was turned up to 11. Continuing the tradition that started at Deus Australia 6 years ago, the Surf Swap has become an epicenter for surfing nostalgia with a touch of present and future. After taking this tradition and transplanting it in Venice, California we are stoked to feel and see the support from the local surf community. People from every walk of life dusted off old boards from the garage or brought them still dripping from the water to swap, sell, and trade with their fellow barefoot brethren on the Wall of Foam. Alongside the swapping there were many a surf inspired activities happening on the grounds. Vendors from all over California brought threads, old foam, new foam, hand planes, surfboard bags, and skateboards to sling to their community. Adding to the spirit of adventure, motorcycle enthusiast Charley Boorman and an entourage of adventure riders rolled in from Point Mugu on the tail end of Boorman’s motorcycle trip across America to hang out at Deus. Tunes to get you frothing were floating through the airwaves from Ragged ol Sailor, The Merry Rounders, Keala Kennelly and Aska. One of the great parts of this year’s swap was the abundance of photographers displaying work. Dane Peterson came with images expertly captured throughout the prior week’s perfect swell through Malibu. Stunning photos printed on wood by Dylan Gordon. Nouvelle Vague brought pieces from three of their best, Kassia Meador, Morgan Maassen and Todd Glaser. Matt Cuddihy drove his adventure mobile straight into the parking lot and strung his 35mm prints for all to see his journey. Pulled pork sandwiches were served Hawaiian Luau style and were out of this world. The Board Room provided us with a mobile shaping bay for the week. Some of the best shapers at the moment have turned up to have a go at the foam. Thank you all for coming out to the Swap! See ya out in the water!
